The remote Civilian Conservation Corps Trail at gate 4 to Prettyboy Reservoir has the feel of a hike deep in the Central Appalachians, despite being less than 20 miles from Baltimore. The mature oak-hickory forests are deep and shady and, this time of year, echo with the songs of breeding Wood-Pewees, vireos, thrushes, and Ovenbirds. The scrubbier areas offer reliable habitat for Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Prairie Warblers, and Indigo Buntings. Several species of warbler (Worm-eating, Hooded, and Kentucky) which breed only sporadically in the region often can be found here. A side trail leads down to the water’s edge and some spectacular views, reminiscent of the Adirondacks. RSVP required.
