A forest’s hopes rest on golden wings

Pennsylvania couple battles invasives and benefits a bird in decline

Laura and Mike Jackson live on a 114-acre property called Mountain Meadows in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The land used to be part of Laura's family's dairy farm, and since taking ownership the couple has worked to restore an area of forest there that has been hit hard by the gypsy moth and invasive plants. The Jacksons have created habitat for the golden-winged warbler and earned the title of Exemplary Forest Stewards by the nonprofit Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay.
