This document addresses the distribution of submerged aquatic vegetation and principally rooted vascular macrophytes in the Chesapeake Bay, its tributaries, and Chincoteague Bay. Information was gathered using aerial photography and ground truth data.

This manual catalogs local programs in the watershed that positively impacts, either directly or indirectly, the quality of the Chesapeake Bay, the surrounding watershed and the quality of life for its living resources.

Numerous SAV ground surveys have been conducted but most have been limited to specific sections. No one ground survey has delineated baywide SAV patterns. The goal of the 1989 work was to continue the annual monitoring of SAV on a baywide basis using aerial photographic methods with appropriate ground truth to substantiate presence or absence of SAV in particular sections.
